[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "9 Days of Piper Snow" by Daniella Blechner.]
Samara, an adorable girl with dark brown eyes, feels particularly sad on the first anniversary of her father's death. With a heavy heart, she looks out of her window, wishing for nothing more than to laugh and be happy again. Much to her surprise, her day takes an unexpected turn when a white pigeon, with blue eyes and gray feathers on its head, lands on Samara's windowsill. Its cuteness captures the heart of Samara, who quickly befriends the mysterious bird. She chooses to name her new friend Piper Snow, who always makes her smile and follows her everywhere she goes, even to school.
Their friendship continues to grow with each passing day. Not a day goes by without Samara enjoying spending time with Piper Snow, but will he stay? Or will he eventually leave her? Is the visit of the pigeon on the anniversary of her father's death a coincidence? Curious readers will find the answers to these questions as they delve into the pages of Daniella Blechner's book.
9 Days of Piper Snow is a heartwarming story inspired by a real-life pigeon named Piper, who visited the author's house in May 2023. He landed on her office windowsill next to a photo of her beloved father, Ron Paul Blechner, who passed away in 2020. I have to admit that I was genuinely curious about Piper after learning that this tale was inspired by a real-life event. Therefore, imagine how pleased I was to find out that Daniella included photos of Piper at the end of the book!
The story is entertaining and written in rhyming verse that will effortlessly keep children's attention until the last page. What I enjoyed the most about the book were the full-page illustrations that perfectly complemented the story. I was pretty amazed by Victor Onyenobi's vibrant and eye-catching artwork. The talented illustrator deserves a round of applause for doing a brilliant job of depicting the special bond between Samara and Piper Snow.
Not only is the story engaging, but it is also highly educational. This 34-page story will teach children about friendship, love, kindness, acceptance, and gratitude. It will especially help children cope with loss and grief, teaching them how important it is to preserve the precious memories shared with their loved ones. If they keep the memories alive in their hearts, their loved ones will never be gone.
In conclusion, I could not find anything to criticize about the book. As I did not encounter any typos or grammatical errors, the book was exceptionally edited. I would recommend it to young readers between the ages of 6 and 10. Because of its powerful themes, eye-catching illustrations, and engaging rhyming style, I am delighted to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
