Have you ever wondered what a therapy dog does? Archer the Therapy Dog: A Read Together Book by Katie Baron tells the story of the day-to-day life and responsibilities of a therapy dog named Archer. Archer visits libraries, schools, and other places where he is needed. This book is unique in the sense that it is split into two parts. One part is intended to be read aloud to young children about what Archer does every day. The other part is information for adults and older children that can be skipped, shared, or paraphrased if the reader feels it would be suitable for the listener’s age and interest.

This book has positive features for everyone. The author chose a font that would be easily read by people with dyslexia. I loved how inclusive it is to reach a wide audience. I also liked how it gave a lot of great information for adults about the differences between therapy dogs, service dogs, and emotional support animals. For example, it explains the certification process and which animals are required to wear identification. It is great that even adults could learn as they read the book. I think children would enjoy finding the extra Archer images hidden throughout the book as well. Finally, I appreciated that there was a photo of the real Archer at the end to help people see that the book is based on a real therapy dog.

I could only find one drawback, and it’s minor. While the author did use a font that was well-suited for people with dyslexia, the placement of the words was not always ideal. Sometimes it was hard to read simply because the words were dark on an image that was dark too. Despite a white outline around the font, it wasn’t as easy to read as it could have been. If the author had put the text on a white background, it would have been an improvement. However, this is a very minor drawback because it is still legible.

For the numerous positives and only one minor drawback, I give Archer the Therapy Dog: A Read Together Book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It was also exceptionally well edited because it contained no errors.

I think this book is well-suited for young people who like dogs or even adults looking for some more information about therapy dogs. If you want to learn more about therapy dogs in a child-friendly way, you can’t go wrong with Archer the Therapy Dog: A Read Together Book.

I think it's wonderful that there are more books nowadays that encourage inclusivity and teach young children about different circumstances than their own. It also helps children with these conditions feel seen! Wonderful work by the author.
