Most children exude robust energy. When it comes to bedtime, the chase can be daunting for parents. Once in bed, it takes time for the child’s active mind to calm down. How does a parent calm down their child and prepare them for bedtime in a faster manner? The Sleep Switch by Laurie McMillan obviates the parents’ concern.

The author shares with the readers the effective method that she used to get her children to fall asleep. It starts with taking deep breaths in and out. This pulls the reader into a meditative repose. Activating the switch to sleep takes a little practice, but the author reassures the readers that it isn’t a big deal and that it is easy. The minimal text and rhyming words work their charm to engage parents and children alike. The entire text is laid out over the illustrations, which adds to the book’s appeal. The author bestows diversity on the readers through her book. Children of different ethnicities, sleeping in their respective bedrooms, diversify the illustrations. I appreciate the inclusivity in this book.

The illustrations deserve separate applause. The illustrations capture the essence of a child’s room, with plush toys and pet cats, to name a few. The use of cooler tones for most of the illustrations calms the senses and brings about a tranquil atmosphere. Even though some illustrations predominantly used warmer tones, incorporating cooler tones for a desk, wall, pillow, or blanket in the bedroom produced the same effect. The night sky is visible in almost all of the children's bedrooms, which reflexively causes one to yawn.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was heavy-eyed at the end of the book. The author advises self-reading to reap the maximum benefits of this book. But parents can read this book to their children as well. Just make sure that children interact with the material in the book. For example, make sure the child takes deep breaths when the text mentions it. Adding this book to your active child’s bedtime routine will help them fall asleep quicker. There is nothing to dislike in this book, and the fabulous editing, minus a single error, convinces me to rate it 5/5. Hence, I give this book a rating of 5/5.
