Billy Jack (The Great Escape) is not only a children’s book but also an enchanting journey through happy fields of childhood fantasy endowed with naughtiness and warm, practical advice.

It is Stevie’s ten-year-old tornado of curiosity and disappointment. He figures out a huge, splendidly ridiculous scheme somehow based on the story of an ingenious escape. A child’s infinite optimism makes it possible. In Great Escape, Stevie takes a loyal dog companion (the scout, the symbol of canine loyalty) with him. He makes us laugh and cheer him on every step of the way. As the narrator of this adventure, Stevie’s voice is spellbinding. It’s also loaded with naivety and a pinch of impish humor that makes him even more lovable. He falls, he wavers, and he wins, but his kindness is demonstrated. The supporting cast around Stevie makes this journey happen, from Scout to the unusual townsfolk who contribute their own individual flair. Under the deceptive simplicity of this story, there are deep tones—imagination forced to lay hold on it—a theme that alternates between dreams and reality dilemmas as well as holding wonder despite punishment. The themes are not overbearing, but they linger in readers’ hearts like butterflies flying between dandelion wishes.

The writing style is like a warm cup of golden sunshine on a cool autumn afternoon. It is easy to read, but the writing is descriptive. You laugh at the lightning cracks across your heartfelt moments while you wipe away a tear. The characters in this story have indisputable charm, but the pacing is sometimes too slow for my liking (especially when compared to the next rich novella version). Though the resolution wraps it all up nicely, I wanted something a bit bolder at the end. Overall, I really liked the book because of its writing style, and the editing made sure I wasn't bored. I wouldn't say there's anything I dislike about this book. I just thought it was a suggestion. Based on the facts, I'd give it 5 out of 5 stars.
