[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Adventures of Tchotchke" by Dennis Stephan Stuempfle.]
Adventures of Tchotchke by Dennis Stephan Stuempfle collects three stories inspired by Tchotchke, a delightful bunny. In his first adventure, Tchotchke is adopted by the family of Karla and Alex, two children who promise to take good care of him but soon tire of looking after their pet. One day, Tchotchke escapes through the open door. What happened to him? In the second story, we find Tchotchke in the park. There, he befriends Daisy, a duck who, at his request, tries to teach him to become a duck, too, even if this almost costs him dearly. In the third and final story, Tchotchke goes camping with his family in North Carolina and has an unpleasant adventure with a snake.
I enjoyed very much reading Adventures of Tchotchke. Tchotchke's stories are fun, although sometimes unexpected things happen, such as the bunny's escape in the first story and the encounter with the snake in the last one. Tchotchke is an adorable protagonist (he is also very well-drawn), and even if he does not speak to humans, his thoughts are revealed to you and often make you laugh.
One thing that, above all, made me think is that in the first story, Karla and Alex soon get bored of their pet and almost forget about him (they would even like to send him back to get a dog, which they say is much more fun). This reminded me that you should be very careful when adopting a pet and know what it means to take care of him. I must say that this part is the one that struck me the most.
The many typos are the only negative side of this book. I sincerely hope that some good editing will improve its quality.
For these reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I cannot give it the highest rating because of the typos, but this is the only reason why I deduct a star. However, I recommend these beautiful adventures to all children who love their pets or dream of adopting one.
