Review of Stevie Tenderheart Books A Second Kiss Goodnight (A Bedtime Story)
"A Second Kiss Goodnight" is a charming bedtime story from children's author Steve William Laible. Part of the popular Stevie Tenderheart Books series, this tale follows young Stevie as he hatches a creative plan to help himself fall asleep faster each night. Stevie puts out a request for all the animals in his neighborhood to come kiss him goodnight—not once, but twice each. What ensues is a lighthearted and imaginative story that is sure to make readers of all ages giggle.
Laible has crafted a whimsical world where animals come to life and interact with children in amusing ways. Readers are transported to a quaint small town where barnyard critters, forest creatures, and even zoo animals come together each evening in a "conga line" to deliver their sloppy, slimy, tickly kisses to Stevie. Laible paints vivid pictures that allow readers' minds to run wild with the possibilities of what each animal's kiss might be like. From giraffe tongue smooches to monkey snacks left behind, no kiss is too bizarre. Young readers will find the imagery funny and entertaining, while older children and parents will enjoy Laible's playful nature and ability to find humor in every scenario.
The editing of the book is well done; there were no grammatical mistakes found. Under the silly surface, "A Second Kiss Goodnight" also subtly promotes values like cooperation, community, and creativity. Stevie's gentle request brings all the diverse animals of the town together each night in harmony. The story shows kids that when people and creatures work as a group, amazing things can happen. It also encourages children to think outside the box, like Stevie does when hatching his unique bedtime plan. Overall, Laible's message is one of inclusiveness, imagination, and playing together. There are no negative points to mention.
Recommended for ages 4–8, "A Second Kiss Goodnight" is a quick, enjoyable read-aloud perfect for bedtime. Laible's rhyming prose flows musically and keeps the story entertaining from start to finish. While the tale may give parent readers a chuckle or two as well, young audiences are sure to be engrossed and request repeat readings. Full of heart and humor, this book is sure to become a new favorite for sleepyheads and gigglers everywhere. Laible has crafted a special story that is magical, memorable, and will have kids dreaming sweet dreams for nights to come. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
