In A Long Ago Place, Donna Betten channels her inner child by thinking back to her days playing the popular and creative children's game called "House," where imagination reigns supreme and bonds that last a lifetime are formed. As the young Betten makes her way to her playhouse after her imaginary work, her children, Porky, Jemoo, Serena, Lindy Loo, Semolina, Wendy, Suzanna, Pinky, and the one-eyed teddy, Teddy, excitedly await her. She rewards them with kisses for being well-behaved and proceeds with the task of making the home. Through her interactions with her imaginary companions, Betten beautifully captures the innocence and wonder of childhood, where mundane objects become magical treasures and playmates become dear friends.

Betten encourages other women to reflect on their time playing the game and how it helped them become the mothers they are today. One of the logical takeaways from the book is that it prepares children for the future in many ways. Children stand to be positively influenced in intellectual development, creativity, empathy, and social skills when they are encouraged to engage in the kind of imaginative play the author portrays in the book.

Betten’s writing style is both descriptive and poetic, painting a vivid picture that takes readers into the wonderful world of her playhouse. The author displays a much-appreciated ability to evoke emotions like nostalgia, joy, and warmth through her storytelling, which adds depth and relatability to the story. These emotional connections can make a story more engaging for readers, providing older readers with fond memories of their childhood play experiences.

She also uses vivid and engaging visuals that capture the essence of the story and enhance the narrative experience. Not only do the visuals complement Betten’s eloquent writing, but they also engage readers, especially younger audiences, who are drawn to the vibrant, graphic illustrations. The book also comes across as an exceptionally edited piece since I did not find any errors while reading.

A Long Ago Place is a heartwarming and enchanting exploration of childhood wonder. Through the adventures in her playhouse and the endearing interactions with her make-believe children, Betten reminds us of the magic and innocence of youth, inviting readers of all ages to rediscover the joy of play and the power of imagination. Children between the ages of six and twelve, as well as children at heart, will enjoy everything this book has to offer. All things considered, I rate the book five out of five since I did not have any issues during my reading experience.
