Superheroes easily influence children as they read and watch many of them daily. In the book Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base, illustrated by Debbie Hefke, the author uses the superhero mantra to teach children how to read and proper behaviour, manners, and values. The main character in this book is Toni, a superhero. He is a child hero who also carries out everyday tasks like playing, swimming, reading, drawing, rescuing animals, eating healthy, and a whole lot more.

This book is not plot-driven per se but is just a simple orientation for children about the character Toni. When he is not busy saving the world, Toni appears as an ordinary child, carrying out regular tasks peculiar to children. This would go a long way toward influencing children to carry out some of these tasks and learn how to work with other children. This book employs repetition to drive home its point and also to get young toddlers to learn to read. The illustrations are another remarkable aspect of this book; the descriptions are sparse, but on a lot of pages, the pictures are also unique and extensively show Toni's activities at all times, so even if the child forgets the word, the surrounding illustrations would trigger their minds to remember.

I had no dislikes for this short story, as I concluded that it would be an excellent addition to home and school libraries where it could easily be read to toddlers and preschool children; they could quickly learn to read from it, mainly because of its repetitious nature. It also had some lessons; for example, Toni ate healthy foods like broccoli and other vegetables. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is excellently well-edited, hence the lack of errors. I recommend it to toddlers, preschool children, parents, and caregivers.
