The Adventures of Peanut: My Journey before Birth by Luc Adriaenssen is a charming and imaginative children's book that invites young readers into the whimsical world of an unborn baby, affectionately called Peanut. Narrated from Peanut's perspective, this book offers a delightful glimpse into the mysterious and playful life within the womb, stretching from four months before birth to the big day.

Peanut's narrative is humorous and endearing, capturing the curiosity and innocence of a child as he describes his cozy yet increasingly cramped "belly-home." The story unfolds through Peanut's eavesdropping on his parents, Murielle and Sébastien, who eagerly anticipate his arrival. Peanut's playful commentary on his growth, the preparations for his birth, and the various sounds and movements he experiences inside the womb make it a captivating read. In addition, simple and playful language makes it accessible and engaging for children aged 2-6.

The book has short, easily digestible sections, each accompanied by charming illustrations that bring Peanut's world to life. These illustrations capture the attention of young readers and serve for discussions between children and their parents. The narrative encourages questions and interaction, fostering a deeper understanding of the miracle of life before birth.

One of the standout features of this book is its ability to blend educational elements with a light-hearted narrative. Peanut's innocent musings about complex concepts like family, the physical changes he undergoes, and the weather outside entertain and inform readers. For instance, his confusion about rain and excitement over a rainbow make abstract ideas more concrete for young minds.

Adriaenssen, Peanut's granddad, wrote this book as a lasting memory for his grandson, with all royalties directed to Peanut's savings account. This personal touch adds an extra layer of warmth and affection to the story, making it a heartfelt gift from a grandparent to their grandchild.

The book, however, contains grammatical errors, including misspellings and inconsistencies. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Overall, The Adventures of Peanut celebrates life and the anticipation of welcoming a new family member. The book’s gentle humor, engaging illustrations, and interactive potential make it an excellent addition to any child's library. It offers a unique perspective on prenatal development, wrapped in a narrative that is as entertaining as it is educational.
