In the year 2439, humans have genetically modified leopard cats to be disease-resistant, which has also made them exceptionally intelligent. Hunters by Athena Luo follows a family of these leopard cats, comprising the parents, Dust and Mist, and their young ones, as they navigate the challenges of survival and confront the looming threat of encroaching humans. It addresses human impact on the environment, highlighting the ways in which human activities can disrupt and damage the natural world, ultimately threatening the survival of wildlife.

From the very beginning, Luo masterfully weaves a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking. The characters are well-developed, each with their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. From the courageous Wind to the curious Splash, and the loyal Cloud, readers will find themselves rooting for these brave felines as they face various obstacles and dangers. The interactions between the siblings are filled with genuine emotion and realistic dialogue that make their bonds feel authentic and relatable.

The plot is well-paced, balancing moments of intense action with quieter scenes of introspection and character development. Luo's descriptions of the natural world are vivid and evocative, painting a detailed picture of the landscape that serves as the backdrop for the cats' adventures. The world-building is thorough, with a keen attention to detail that brings the environment and its inhabitants to life.

One of the standout aspects of Hunters is its exploration of themes such as loyalty, family, and the struggle for survival. The leopard-cats' interactions with the mysterious Amaya and the discovery of the complex social structures among the different groups of cats add layers of intrigue to the story.

Luo's writing style is accessible yet elegant, making it suitable for a wide range of readers. The dialogue is natural and often laced with subtle humor, which helps to lighten the mood during tense moments. The epilogue, featuring an encounter between Ripple and Kanako, sets up an intriguing premise for potential future installments, leaving readers eager for more.

Overall, Hunters is a remarkable debut that showcases Athena Luo's talent for storytelling. I didn't dislike anything about the book, and I didn't come across any significant grammatical errors. Therefore, I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Hunters is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted tale of courage, friendship, and the enduring spirit of the wild.
