"Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe is a heartwarming story about two siblings navigating a new life in California while their parents are away on a missionary trip. Donny, who has Down syndrome, and his sister, Mary Grace, face the challenges of a new school and environment, but with the support of their grandparents, they thrive. Their grandparents are part of a secret group called the Grandma Gang, who are cool, wise, and determined to help their grandkids solve a mystery surrounding bullying at their school. Together, they learn valuable lessons about family, acceptance, and standing up for what's right.

This book shines with its positive portrayal of a family that celebrates each other's strengths and differences. The narrative also successfully tackles the sensitive issue of bullying. As Donny and Mary Grace, along with the Grandma Gang, work together to solve the mystery, the book subtly encourages readers to stand up for what's right, speak out against bullying, and use their voices to make a positive impact. The book promotes inclusivity, acceptance, and empathy, encouraging readers to see beyond differences and appreciate people for who they are. The Grandma Gang is a delightful addition, showing that age is just a number and that wisdom and wit come with experience. The story is full of heart, humour, and adventure, making it a joy to read.

There are no drawbacks to this book. The overall tone of the book is heartening and encouraging. It emphasises resilience, the value of teamwork, and the strength that comes from family unity. These themes are woven seamlessly into the plot, making the story not just entertaining but also educational. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. It is exceptionally well edited. Readers of all ages can take away valuable lessons about empathy, courage, and the power of love and support within a family.
