In Hunters, Athena Luo tells a gripping story set in the year 2439 about smart, genetically modified leopard cats. These cats, who are resistant to disease, must survive as humans encroach on their territory. The story follows a cat family—Dust and Mist and their young ones—as they face these challenges.

Athena Luo, the author, creates well-developed characters with unique traits that make them lovable. The brave Wind, curious Splash, and loyal Cloud form a trio with heartfelt interactions and realistic dialogue, making their bond feel genuine and relatable. The story moves at a good pace, balancing exciting action with moments of reflection and character growth. Luo's vivid descriptions of nature pull readers into a lush, detailed world. Her careful world-building makes the setting, and its inhabitants feel alive and believable.

A highlight of the novel is its exploration of themes like loyalty, family, and survival. The interactions between the leopard cats and the mysterious Amaya, along with the discovery of complex social structures among different cat groups, add depth and intrigue. Luo's writing is clear and elegant, appealing to a wide audience. The dialogue is natural and often subtly humorous, providing light moments amid the tension. For a thirteen-year-old author, I find this a beautifully written book. Wildly imaginative and filled with creativity, the fact that she chose animals to write a story around is quite brave and should be appreciated.

I found no negative aspects throughout the read. The book was exceptionally edited, with no spelling or grammar errors.

I would rate this book five out of five stars. Overall, this book is an outstanding read that showcases Athena Luo's storytelling talent. Its well-crafted plot, rich character development, and thought-provoking themes make it a must-read for anyone who likes to read stories about courage, friendship, and the wild.
