What a cracking little book this is. It takes our imagination out of the 'here and now' and into the moonlit wilderness, where we live alongside these beautiful creatures. The year is 2439, and Mankind has tried to rectify its mistakes and restore nature to its original state. Leopard-cats have been immunised against disease and are now very intelligent, telepathic and savvy. They are beautiful creatures, a cross between the Asian Leopard and the ordinary domestic cat. It is a compelling tale of a litter of leopard-cats and the adventures they experience on their road to being adults.

We are introduced to Mist, a nurturing mother, and Smoke, a proud and dedicated father. They are resolute in their mission to raise their kits in a manner that equips them with the harsh realities of nature. Three 'moon cycles' must pass before the kits can begin their adult training, each under the tutelage of their mentor or 'skillclaw'. They will strive to fulfil their 'forest', 'moor' or 'river-cat' destiny, adhering to the three training principles: train hard, respect elders, and never abandon a group member.

As we delve into the pages, we are fully immersed in their world, dashing through the undergrowth, hunting for food, eluding badgers, experimenting with herbs and plants, and frolicking under the moonlight. The vivid descriptions and captivating narrative style seamlessly integrate us into their journey, making us feel like we are right there with them.

The young author, Athena Luo, knows how we all must learn to respect our world. In this book, Athena presents an adventure that delves into the world we must protect. The book is of a good length, not too long, to enable children to enjoy it. It's not overly verbose, with simple, short descriptive paragraphs. Sometimes, pictures can lighten a children's book, yet the reader is prompted to use their imagination, which is good. I will award this book five out of five stars as it's good, and there is nothing that I would change, plus it's well-edited.
