Review of Binnie and the Glitter Guitar
The story revolves around a talented individual named Quinn, also known as Binnie. Her passion for playing the guitar is evident. She dreams of becoming a renowned rock star. Quinn also excels in soccer, a skill she developed through years of dedicated practice with her siblings. Her commitment to the team named Miracle Music over the past four years speaks volumes about her dedication to the sport. In addition to her musical and athletic talents, Quinn is friendly and maintains good academic standing. However, the story takes an embarrassing turn when Quinn's math teacher wakes her out of one of her daydreaming episodes.
In a subsequent math class, Quinn is paired with the new girl in class, Lian. They discover that they share common interests and live close to each other. Quinn learns that Lian excels in classical guitar music under the mentorship of her father, who is one of the world's premier guitarists. Additionally, Lian becomes a fellow member of the same soccer team as Quinn. Lian and her father have relocated to the area while her mother is in China caring for her ailing parents.
The plot thickens when Quinn's aging guitar needs repairs at a local music shop, undertaken by Mr. Apapa, her music teacher. During this visit, Quinn encounters the captivating golden-colored glitter guitar, which can be acquired by winning a contest involving the creation of an original song and musical composition. Quinn is determined to win the guitar and works earnestly to create an exceptional, original piece. However, her mental makeup is disrupted upon discovering Lian's participation in the contest. How does this challenge the close bond they cultivated? The book Binnie and the Glitter Guitar, authored by Michael Wuehler, keeps readers in suspense as they wonder whether Quinn wins the competition.
I thoroughly admire the author for the well-developed characters of Quinn and Lian. He delves into their backstories and creates a story depicting a profound friendship interwoven with the allure of the glittering, golden-colored guitar. I appreciate the attention to detail in the sections that mention the guitar and soccer episodes. Moreover, the author beautifully showcases virtues like sharing, accepting differences, willingness to learn, consistent effort toward goals, meaningful friendship, and teamwork. Additionally, the tale incorporates lighthearted elements, such as familial dynamics and comical situations, illustrating bravery and perseverance in adversity.
The book's strengths lie in its surprising twists and satisfying conclusion. It effectively communicates the importance of looking beyond material possessions and self-interest. The book portrays how genuine friendship flourishes through acts of kindness and selflessness. Instilling these values in children during their formative years can help raise well-rounded individuals. In addition, the illustrations complement the story by visually depicting the characters and events.
While I noticed some minor errors, they did not significantly impact my reading experience. A simple re-edit could enhance the reader's delight by ensuring an error-free book. Hence, devoid of other negatives, I rate this book five out of five stars. Although suitable for younger readers, the book holds relevance for diverse age groups and is a commendable addition to home and educational libraries.
