NICO by Marlene Rattigan is a children's book where Nico, a Sulphur-Crested cockatoo bird, is the darling of the plot. Nico loves to sing, dance, and do many tricks to amuse his audience. Kim loves sitting with her friends and watching Nico perform while they enjoy laughing and giggling. However, summer vacation begins, and Kim goes out with her mother for long hours, leaving Nico home alone. This leads to Nico losing his appetite to eat and becoming depressed. The story unfolds as Nico gets lost on a train and is frightened. With the loneliness at home and then getting lost in the train, will Nico regain his confidence and be that joyful bird again?

This book not only teaches children but also adults how sad it is for the pets we own when we easily lock them at home while we are away the whole day, be it a bird or an animal. "He even stopped bobbing up and down and dancing sideways when they came home." This line almost brought tears to my eyes. We all know how happy pets get when they see their owner has arrived after a long day. This book teaches children how important it is to spend time with pets, be it a bird or any other animal.

I really enjoyed this book because the author effectively included various facts about birds that captivate young children's attention and engage their curiosity about the beauty and origins of these birds.

I would gladly award this book a 5-star rating, given its flawless editing and lack of any negative aspects. The pictures in the book were well illustrated and will keep the reader latched on.

I recommend this book to children, where instead, parents can read it to them, making it interactive. With its illustrative pictures and valuable content, young readers can not only enjoy the story but, at the same time, learn some good values too. Being an animal and bird lover, I was impressed with the values it shares. I am sure the children will learn some good morals at a young age too.
