In the story “Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures“ by Catherine A. Pepe, the main characters, Mary Grace and her brother Donny, live a joyous life full of fun, frolics, and little adventures with the family. Their initially joyful existence in Kansas drastically changes in the story when their parents embark on a missionary activity in Africa, so the children had to live with their grandparents in California. From the time the two arrived, Mary Grace and Donny embarked on a whirlwind of experiences. They go to new schools, socialize, and even get to solve a mystery. Having Donny as a protagonist is a rare and extraordinary thing, as he is a cheerful boy with Down syndrome, making this story quite touching. Their relationship as siblings is very impressive, which describes how a family is an essential part of people’s lives.

This book is entertaining and offers valuable lessons, making it a valuable addition to every reader's collection. Families, friendship, and the acceptance of other people and their differences are mentioned in the novel. Donny is an example of a positive and resilient character focus, and Mary Grace portrays a courageous character focus as well as the ability to problem-solve.

All in all, there is nothing bad that I can say about “Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures." It’s enjoyable for young readers and people of all ages. It is well told, the characters are endearing, the editing was flawless, leaving no room for errors, and the moral of the story is simple but truly wise. For these reasons, I award the book a perfect rating of five out of five stars. This is a book one will always remember after closing the back cover.

I believe that families would totally enjoy the book, and I will also recommend it for bedtime reading. Kids will enjoy reading the story of Mary Grace and Donny, while parents will smile at the lessons imparted from the book. Without a doubt, it is suitable for a family read-aloud or for solo reading.
