Nico is an illustrated children’s book written by Marlene Rattigan. Nico is a sulphur-crested cockatoo, a pet owned by a young girl, Kim, whose mother ran a florist’s shop at a railway station. Nico was a lively bird who loved to sing, dance, whistle, and talk, and enjoyed being watched and interacted with. He watched birds outside from his cage while waiting for Kim to return from school. But he was saddened when Kim spent the whole day with her mother in their shop during Kim’s summer holidays. He stopped eating, dancing, and singing. He stopped responding when Kim and her mother were back home from the shop. Children will enjoy the story of Nico’s adventures when Kim took him to her mother’s shop to bring him out of his depression.

The brightly colored illustrations by Sergio Drumond are quite impressive and successfully depict the scenes and the emotions on the characters’ faces. The book is both educational and entertaining. The author has used very simple yet effective words to narrate the story and avoided verbalism and too much text, making it appropriate for young children. The illustrations and the text are beautifully coordinated and complement each other. The font used for the text is simple, clear, in contrast with the background, and easy to read, which is an important requirement for a children’s book.

The book contains a lot for the children to learn. They will learn new words related to day-to-day life and enrich their vocabulary. It is quite capable of piquing children’s curiosity and enhancing their imagination. It teaches children about caring for a pet and shows that pets need affection, and they can feel lonely and neglected, just like humans. The best aspect of the book is the information provided about the sulphur-crested bird. The author has described their physical features, their habitat, their behavior and speech, food habits and requirements, courting practices, their life span, and their relations with humans, especially the farmers. I did not find anything to dislike about the book. The editing is flawless, and the book is absolutely free of errors. The book deserves a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

The author, being an experienced writer of fiction for children, has excelled at writing this awesome book. The contribution of Sergio Drumond to adding value to the book is remarkable, as the illustrations have a long-lasting effect on young minds. The book provides entertainment, education, and moral values for the children. It is most suitable for children aged 4 to 8 years, but even older children will enjoy and benefit from it. It will make an excellent addition to a home collection or children's library for its educational value.
