NICO, written by Marlene Rattigan, is a charming and captivating children's book that wonderfully illustrates the themes of courage and the importance of family. Through its engaging story and endearing characters, the book explores how bravery can manifest in various forms and emphasises the strength found in close family ties. The narrative is skillfully crafted, making it not only entertaining but also a meaningful exploration of these universal themes.

The story tells us about a cute bird named Nico who had the ability to do amazing things. Nico lived with his owners, Kim and her mother, and he performed frequently to entertain Kim and her friends. He absolutely loved the attention he got whenever he performed, but this roller coaster of bliss soon came to an end when Kim and her mother got too busy to pay attention to him. This new development made him so upset that he stopped eating. Kim and her mother became worried, so they decided to bring him to their flower shop. This didn’t go exactly as planned, and Nico became missing. Will he eventually find his way home? Find out when you read this book.

This book is an absolutely amazing read and very suitable for children. The illustrations were very bright and vividly colourful, capturing the attention of young readers with their rich and vibrant hues. These illustrations not only complemented the narrative but also enhanced the reader’s experience by adding a layer of visual storytelling. I also loved the fact that the author emphasised the need to care for animals and ensure their health and wellbeing. This book was a beautiful read that was both entertaining and imparted valuable moral lessons.

There was absolutely nothing to dislike about this book; there were no contents that were unsuitable for children. One of the things I loved about this book was the additional information about birds provided at the end. It could spark children’s curiosity and make them want to learn more about birds. Overall, the book is a heartwarming and engaging read for children.

I’d rate this book five out of five stars because it combines an engaging story with meaningful moral lessons, making it enjoyable for children. The book was flawlessly edited; I didn’t come across any grammatical or spelling errors while reading. I’d recommend this book to children who have the ability to and love reading short stories.
