In Catherine Anna Pepe's book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, we are introduced to Mary Grace, a sixth-grader, and her adorable five-year-old brother Donny, who has Down syndrome. Their life in Kansas takes an unexpected turn when their parents receive a two-year missionary assignment in Africa from their church. This sudden change leads to the siblings being sent to live with their grandparents in California. Mary Grace wasn't happy about this latest development, but Donny was all joy.

For those of us lucky enough to have grown up in stable, loving homes, it can be hard to understand the challenges some of our peers might have faced. I see this book as a reminder that not everyone's home life is the same and that a little understanding can go a long way in bridging gaps and fostering a more inclusive community. Be kind to those with special needs. While the story is fictional, I love that it resonates with an authenticity that many children's books often miss. Catherine A. Pepe tackles real-life issues that kids deal with daily: the rollercoaster of emotions, the reality of bullying, the importance of inclusivity, and the truth about the lack of kindness creeping into children's lives.

Whether you're a parent looking to broaden your child's perspective or a teacher seeking to address complex social issues in your classroom, I recommend Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe to you, as it offers a lot of life lessons. It's the kind of story that stays with you long after you've turned the last page, and it challenges us all to be a little more like Donny—full of joy, quick to comfort, and always ready to celebrate the happiness of others. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was exceptionally well-edited, and I disliked nothing about it.

The mention of the “Grandma Gang” as supportive characters in the book adds a delightful touch to the story. It’s clear that Pepe has created a rich and diverse cast of characters that contribute to the overall charm of the book. The presence of these supportive figures likely provides a sense of warmth and community, further reinforcing the themes of family and resilience.

The review touches on the thematic depth of the book, particularly in how it addresses the challenges and joys of children with special needs. This thematic richness is what makes *Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures* a standout in children’s literature. It goes beyond just telling a story; it offers readers a deeper understanding of important social issues, making it a meaningful read for both children and adults.
