In Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe, readers are introduced to the Miller family and their transformative journey. The story follows siblings Mary Grace and Donny, who, after a joyful summer in Kansas, face a significant change when their parents embark on a two-year missionary trip to Africa. Left in the care of their grandparents in California, the children must adapt to a new environment, leaving behind their familiar life. The narrative highlights the challenges and adjustments they face, particularly Mary Grace’s initial resistance and Donny’s cheerful acceptance of their new home.

What I like about this book is the heartwarming depiction of sibling love and support. Mary Grace’s dedication to her brother Donny, who has Down syndrome, is portrayed with depth and empathy. The book effectively showcases their bond, illustrating how Mary Grace’s patience and affection help both children navigate their new surroundings. The portrayal of Donny’s condition is handled with sensitivity, providing a realistic yet positive representation that emphasizes his joyful spirit and the supportive role of his family.

While the book excels in character development and emotional depth, there are a few areas that could be expanded upon. The only thing I did not like is that the narrative does a commendable job of capturing the essence of the characters’ experiences but could benefit from more detailed descriptions of Donny’s condition and how it affects his daily life. This additional context would enhance the reader’s understanding of his character and the challenges he faces. Despite this minor shortcoming, the book remains engaging and was flawlessly edited, with no noticeable errors affecting the reading experience.

Overall, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is recommended for children aged 7 and up, offering valuable lessons on adaptability, sibling relationships, and empathy.
