Mouse lives in a library. There is nothing particularly interesting about his identity, but he grows up with a unique personality. He is curious and eager to learn. He learns how to read and gets to know a whole lot of things about the world outside his immediate environment. One day, Mouse's curiosity gets the better of him, as he sneaks out of his room in the library and wanders to the outside world.

There, Mouse meets a butterfly and the two get along well. The butterfly offers to help him get more seeds of maple trees, but the adventure takes an unexpected turn. Mouse is left alone, and he has no idea how to get back to his home in the library. Going forward, Mouse will encounter new characters that will impact him in various ways. Will Mouse ever be able to find his way home?

Mouse Trax by M.H. Dixon is a mix of prosaic narrative and poetry, and it was delivered with utmost creativity. The story gives an in-depth exploration of inquisitiveness (search for meaning) and the different shades of life and adventure. Initially, Mouse merely wanted to satisfy his curiosity and never expected the friendship, threats, obstacles, and teamwork that would come from this undertaking. Through it all, the story highlights the beauty in the search for meaning and the sense of completeness that comes from resilience.

One of the outstanding merits of this story is its rich rhymes. I enjoyed the musicality, the distinct harmony, and appreciated the unique impression created with such echoic words as clucking, squawking, and shrieking. Dixon has done a great job creating a coherent narrative whereby every incident and encounter links to the next or gives a hint of what is to come—from the encounter with a butterfly down to the meeting with a lizard.

The character One is well developed to complement the major character Mouse and has a huge influence on the plot and thematic development. One's presence shows the power of teamwork and solidarity. The antagonist, Fox, is another notable character in the story. The story is somewhat convoluted, wiggling from one incident and development to another, yet its charm remains intact. Mouse's adventure takes the readers to many characters and places, giving vivid realities of each.

I didn't dislike anything in this book. The text was thoroughly proofread. The language is generally simple. The narrative is captivating, and the themes are impactful. Given these reasons, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Mouse Trax has the elements that will interest both children and adults.
