These days it seems that a lot of children’s books are either trying too hard or not trying at all. That isn’t the case with What did you do at school today? by C.C. Lacavera. This cute little story is a wonderful breath of fresh air and a great tool for parent-child interaction.

The book works so well because it’s simple, while still providing ample opportunity for engagement during family reading time. Page after page offers a different way for parents and children to interact with fun questions about their day at school.

As a mom of three children, I try my best to read and engage with them so they grow up with an interest in reading and the amazing worlds that reading can open up for them. Like any busy parent, reading long stories or doing funny voices night after night can be difficult to maintain. That is where an excellent book like this comes in. It’s a great tool to engage with a child because it allows kids to do most of the talking or explaining as they respond to each page's different questions.

It even has opportunities for being extra silly, like flying to the moon or riding in a hot air balloon. I loved reading this to my 6-year-old as he laughed and said, “No mama, of course I didn’t fly to the moon. That’s crazy!.”

An additional bonus to this story is the fantastic illustrations. The beautiful artwork provides lots of opportunities for engagement by showing shapes, music, environmental changes, and a diverse group of students that gives children from different walks of life a chance to find themselves in the pages.

I have nothing negative to say about this book. I found no errors and it was exceptionally well edited. I give it a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend this book to all children and parents because it’s a great tool for fun quality time.
