Due to my career involved with schools, I selected this children’s book to read called “What Did You Do at School Today” by C. C. Lacavera. This children’s book is an insightful exploration that parents can use as a tool for the purpose of understanding what their children are learning at school.

The questions, illustrations, and the topics that are explored, due to the intention of this author, guides the conversation parents will want to have with their kids.

The author uses sensory descriptive terms with many questions to help parents draw out from their child what specific topic areas they learned, along with what they touched, saw, smelt & emotionally felt at school. This can help parents get an understanding of ways they can return feedback to the school on how their child is experiencing school.

With both parents working, in many cases today, this book can be very helpful because it draws out from their child what is happening with the author’s open ended questions. This book helps to have valuable and fun conversations because it touches on each school curriculum area from gym class to science and the arts.

It was fun because it offered suggestions on the school experiences that could even make them giggle! Social & emotional learning is encouraged with C.C. Lacavera’s well chosen prompts for talks on sensitive feelings from anger to sadness! This is illustrated with school peer relationship which is very important for kids to learn. With the help of the author’s storyline it affords parents insights on what their child is feeling about relationships so they can help them navigate social situations. With a greater emphasis today on long term mental health, parents are more involved than ever with helping their child develop healthy behaviors with a wide array of social interactions the author illustrates.

Overall, I would recommend this book because the pictures are colorful and illustrate images young children can relate to. Then with the open ended questions, those inspire meaningful conversations. As a bonus, this is written in a simplified format so that young readers could start reading this on their own.
I did not find any typographical errors, which is due to the authors commitment to publish a carefully edited book.

This book would be a wonderful gift to parents because I believe they would find this to be one of the most valuable books that they turn to on a regular basis.
