What Did You Do At School Today? by C. C. Lacavera is a short children’s book that can be read in one sitting or ten minutes. However, the questions within the book could make the experience of reading this book last for many hours.

Each page contains an illustration with a question or two, including rhyming questions. It must be noted that this is not a traditional children’s story where we follow a particular protagonist and their journey. Instead, we get illustrations of experiences that children will relate to, such as getting picked up and dropped off by the school bus, school activities (sports, arts and crafts, music), extracurriculars (field trips, nature walks), the alphabet, math, and more. In addition, it lightly introduces diversity, fostering friendships, the importance of sharing, having fun, learning new things, exploring the world, and being more aware of the five senses.

I like the book’s illustrations. As the book progresses, the questions and illustrations become more imaginative, which young children will enjoy. I also like that the book has thirty-one questions, giving parents a variety of questions to choose from to engage with their children. Lastly, the book’s font is clear and easy to read.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. However, I have two points worth mentioning. Firstly, parents who prefer more science-based books may not appreciate the imaginative aspects of the book. However, it can be a good discussion between parents and children about the difference between what is real and imaginary. Secondly, a boy appears in every illustration, but he is unnamed, and one cannot tell that he is the main character until the end of the story. Some children may get confused by this ambiguity.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The two points I notes above did not justify deducing the book's perfect rating. It is a well-edited and error-free book with questions that focus more on the experience of communicating with your child than the actual book itself. I recommend it to all parents who want a book with questions that may foster good communication and understanding.
