I have seen a parrot once or twice, but they rarely talk; rather, they make exciting noises, which somehow makes it seem as if they are talking or singing.

NICO by Marlene Rattigan is a children’s book about a bird named Nico. Nico was a pet owned by Kim. Nico was an interesting bird; he loved to dance, sing, and whistle around. Most of the time, Nico entertained Kim and her friends at home, and they all loved him. But from time to time, Nico got bored whenever Kim went to school, but he never worried because he engaged in other activities like watching other birds. However, during the summer holidays, Kim was never at home because she always went out with her mom, and they usually came back late in the evening. This made Nico sad, and he felt bad. He also stopped eating because he was no longer the happy bird that he used to be. As time went on, Nico started losing weight because of his condition. This made Kim worried, and she suggested to her mum that they take Nico along with them while heading to their flower shop. Nico was excited; he was finally happy again, and he started singing and entertaining people as he used to before. One day, Kim took Nico out of his cage so he could perform as he used to, and as he was dancing around, he saw who he thought to be Kim getting onto a train; he flew quickly onto the train, but to his surprise, the little child wasn’t Kim. Where was Kim? Did Nico later get back to Kim? Read this book to find out.

This book was actually amazing. The author wrote the storyline well. I loved how the author described Nico's movements in the book, as well as the little songs and new words Nico learned as he went to new places. Also, the colorful images added by the author made the book more exciting and comprehensible. Also, I loved Kim’s attitude towards her pet; she was a smart and observant kid. I loved that she was able to notice that her pet wasn’t acting as it used to, and she thought of options to make it happy, which was very nice of her. Also, I loved how Kim’s mom was open to her daughter’s suggestion. She gave her daughter a listening ear, which was a sign of good parenting and should be employed by every parent.

There was nothing I disliked about the book. Although it was a children’s book, I had a great time reading it. The extra information about the bird used to illustrate the story was quite educational. It was my first time learning about the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo bird. From the factual information I was able to learn about the location of where the bird can be found and how they usually behave.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was exciting and educative. It was superbly edited, and it didn’t contain any grammatical errors. This book would be a suitable bedtime story for kids and children who love to read about pets.
