Farmer Beau’s Farm is a children’s book written by Kathleen Geiger that follows Farmer Beau and his wife Bamma as they take care of a batch of kittens. They left food out for them every day so that they wouldn’t get hungry, but as the days turned to weeks, kitten after kitten went off on their own, leaving the farm and the couple. Saddened by their loss, they endeavored to try to entice the kittens to stay, but they only succeed in keeping one, Kailey Kitten.

The friendly kitten goes on to make friends with Samantha Bunny and offers to make the farm her home as well. Farmer and Bamma overhear this and decide that making the farm Sammy’s home was the best course of action. The two live out their days in the barn and have so much fun together over the summer. One day they overhear that the Farmer and Bamma are going to be taking in another animal for the farm, but one that is not usually considered a farm animal. While they rack their brains for what the newcomer might be, Farmer and Bamma know that taking in this animal will make their farm a magical place.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars for it’s easy to understand the moral lesson that we should be kind to one another as much as possible. Kailey Kitten’s curious and friendly nature easily adhere the reader to her, but she is also shown to have a slightly cruel streak when confronted with the new animal. Because she is so easy to relate to, the reader learns alongside her that cruel behavior should instead be replaced with kindness.

There are frequent pictures to go with the story, and while they aren’t my favorite due to their appearance of being made in Paint, they get help the reader envision the characters. While it is never stated outright, the animal’s fun coloring is made interesting with the illustrations and would have otherwise been overlooked in the absence of the pictures.

One aspect that I found lacking was that the introduction of the new mystery animal is at almost the end of the story, which leaves the reader wanting more. Kailey Kitten learns to be kind and to comforts the newcomer along with Sammy, but otherwise that is the only interaction the three have together.

I think this book would be great for kids because it teaches them not to make comments on other people’s appearance, especially not in front of their face! But the book shows clearly that words like that hurt very much, and that people on the receiving end of such cruelty only want to be accepted.
