Well, there are two major things you need to know about Billy Jack; perhaps that will help you understand why he embarked on the adventure recorded in this book. First, he doesn't like the idea of going to bed when it's not yet dark. Second, he is independent; he sort of likes to set his own rules and control what goes on in his life. So, one evening, after being tucked into bed, he decided he was not going to drift off. There is still daylight, and he wants to go out and play.

But Billy Jack wants to "be" in bed while out there. He begins to weave some tricks, meticulous with every step. For some time, it was all fun and promising. Then he begins to face some challenges. This takes us through the incident with the rosebush down to the risk of his shadow giving him away. Billy has two options. Which will he choose?

Stevie Tenderheart Books - Billy Jack (The Great Escape) by Steve William Laible was a delightful read. It addresses children's perception of bedtime routines and natural phenomena around them and how they could respond to such. Billy Jack is a character most children can relate to; he mirrors children's inner aspirations and innate instincts for self-expression. He is not particularly deviant; he just wants to create a life that makes meaning to him.

I liked Steve's writing style. He is jovial and makes things animated, crafting a conducive atmosphere for a fun read and connection to the main character, Billy. The language is generally simple. There are instances where we see some uncommon words, but those are followed with short notes explaining their meaning.

I rate this book five out of five stars for the following reasons. The story was compelling. There are a couple of lessons to learn from Billy's story. The pictures added depth to the narrative. The book was thoroughly proofread. Nothing interfered with my reading.
