Oftentimes, we don't get to witness some scary events that happen at night because we are fast asleep. Written by Marlene Rattigan and illustrated by Sergio Drumond, Batty Wings is an adventurous, magical and delightful storybook for children. Nanna has the magical ability to turn into a bat and fly at night. In this book, Marlene narrates Nanna's 'batty' escapades at night to Mia and JJ in a captivating manner.

What sets Batty Wings apart from other children's storybooks is the beautiful and enchanting artwork by Drumond, which transforms Nanna's night flight into a visual treat and excitement. More so, I found the colourful blend of the illustrations captivating and complements the author's eloquent story narrations. Together, they spark creative and imaginative thinking about the characters, reinforce the story and aid my comprehension of the book.

I also found Mia and JJ's curiosity and attempt to explore the unknown relatable. It made me so emotional as it reminded me of my many conversations with my Grandma while she was alive. Nanna's character is endearing by expressing the bond and love between grandparents and grandchildren. I think that children's books should be grammatically flawless, and Batty Wings did not disappoint in this regard, as I found no typo throughout my reading, signifying that this book is well-edited. The language is simple, with an easy-to-flow sentence structure that commiserate with the level of the targeted audience.

Overall, I found nothing to dislike about the book. Consequently, I am awarding this book a perfect rating of five out of five stars for its colourful artwork, immersing storyline and eloquent narration. I, therefore, recommend Batty Wings by Marlene Rattigan to children between the ages of 4 and 8, young adults who enjoy nostalgic and family stories and parents looking for nighttime tales for their kids.
