Batty Wings by Marlene Rattigan is a delightful children's book with an imaginative story, colourful illustrations, and engaging dialogue. The story revolves around two children and their grandmother, whom they call Nanna, who at night transforms into a bat and flies around the house protecting the family and having exciting nightly adventures.

Ageing is a process, and skin becomes loose and sagging is part of that, so how do you explain that to your grandkids? So, when Mia asks Nanna about the loose skin under her arms, Nanna spins a tale of her batty wings and how she uses them to protect the family. This endearing grandma relays her exciting nightly adventures for her grandkids, be it the cat chasing a rat at night, catching up with her bat friends or a robber on their roof escaping from the police. This whimsical tale highlights the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. This book reminded me of my childhood when my grandma used to tell many different stories at night.

I loved how the author used simple words in a dialogue format to convey the story, which made it easy and simple to read for young kids to understand. The vivid and colourful illustrations by Sergio Drumond were spot on, making the story come alive. Although the font style and size could have been better and bigger for my preference, it didn't hinder the story in any way.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars, as the book was professionally edited, and I could not find a single error. The simplicity of the dialogues and narration, without any heavy moral lessons, makes it a refreshing and enjoyable read.

I would recommend this book for children aged 3 to 8 years old, as the book can be enjoyed as a bedtime story for parents or grandparents to read to their children with the possibility of finishing it in minutes.
