Should children listen to their parents? All the time? But what if they want their kids to stop playing? Or they want them to go to bed early? Mom & Dad Are Always Right by Aimee Andren and illustrated by Mike Quinones follows Pete and June, two young children that want to do things their own way because they are now “old enough to know better and should be able to choose.”

The book is written in a beautiful, captivating prose that will keep parents and children entertained. Divided into five short poem-like stories, it follows Pete and June in their adventures as they have to brush their teeth, go to bed, be nice to others, or eat their veggies. I am always a fan of colorful illustrations for children’s books, as I believe they help get their attention, but the illustrations in this book, even though they are black and white, are some of my favorites; they capture the narrative of the book and Pete and June’s personalities, and they are just adorable, so I appreciated the lesson that not every colorful illustration is better than a black and white one.

The book has several lessons about trust, independence, respect, and family relationships. I loved how, after each chapter, Pete and June have learned their lesson and how their family dynamic is always respectful. The thing I love the most about the book is that the author is a former social worker, and her interest in teaching children they are loved and valued is felt in every single page. Overall, I just love the bond between June and Pete.

The font was something I struggled with; it was hard to read, and at times it felt too small, especially for a children’s book. I had to reread some of the sentences because of this, because with the current font, the e and o can get mixed up, it also felt blurry, which is uncommom when reading Kindle books (my chosen format). Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book has been professionally edited, as I only found two minor typos, but I do recommend finding a different and easier-to-read font. The only reason I did not deduct a star because of the font is that I cannot be certain it was only an issue with my copy, so it would be unfair to not give it a perfect rating when everything but the font was perfect.

I recommend Mom & Dad Are Always Right to parents of children five and up. This could be an incredible bedtime story, so parents can share some lessons with their children by allowing them to share what they believe Pete and June learned. This could also be a good book for children to read on their own, as the language is simple.

As a parent this sounds like a great book that parents can use as a tool for reminding children that rules are created out of love to protect and keep them safe. I hope that the font issue is resolved for the kindle version of the book so it is not difficult to read.

I believe tht this children's book can be a great discussion tool for parents to talk about the importance of listening with their children. The fact that every page makes a child feel like they are loved and valued is a good reason to share this book with one's children. Thank you for reviewing this book.
