[Following is a volunteer review of "Toni the Superhero" by R.D. Base.]

[rbc=4]id273738-125[/rbc]I rate this book a 3 out of 4. TONI THE SUPERHERO by R.D Base is a book for young readers which takes a child into the day of Toni. Toni is depicted as a hero who can fly who is always ready to do everyday work. It is about an extraordinary boy doing ordinary things.

I liked that the book was full of colour, which keeps any young reader eager to turn to the next page. Apart from the colourful pictures of our hero, his friends and his various activities, the book is also written in the simplest english which teaches the child new words that are easy to read and recall. I was impressed that the book also tackles social integration amongst kids of different races. Toni is shown playing with a group of his multi-cultural friends promoting social acceptance amongst the author's target group. I applaud the writer for taking a child of african descent to make a hero and to top it off Toni is given a cape. This is every child's dream to be able to fly. This impresses on the mind of any young reader that they too can be able to be a hero and fly.

In as much as the book is easy to read for young kids, it lacks that interaction with the reader which is usually synonimous with most pre-school books.I would have liked if the book encouraged the reader to act out the hero's actions or sound out the words because apart from the book being entertaining we want it to teach the child to read and understand English( I am speaking from an English as a second language background) Apart from the colourful pictures it is not exactly memorable. The book name makes a reader anticipate seeing Toni doing heroic work. Apart from helping the cat down from the tree, he didn't fly.Toni's heroism is somehow lost to the reader.

The author managed though to show that despite being a hero, Toni is involved with his friends, does his chores at home and eats his veggies, all good things parents try to teach their children. This shows that a hero can also be involved in mundane tasks at home and by completing their chores and eating their veggies, a child can be a hero just like Toni.

As an author, R.D Base shows that she knows the inner workings of a child's mind as she puts together all aspects children love and distaste. This makes it easy for a child to relate to the book.
