A Rhyming Book of Creatures and their Fascinating Features! by Olga De Sousa is aptly named. It is a short children’s book giving information about 26 interesting animals. The novelty of the book comes from the fact that the entries are alphabetically arranged, with the author including one animal for each letter of the alphabet.

The way the book is arranged is nice. There’s a table of contents, so kids can easily flip back and forth to find their favourite entries. I can see it easily becoming a curious child’s favourite. Apart from that, this book is a great resource for teaching and entertaining kids; I would recommend it to elementary school teachers and parents of young kids. It’s always great to find a book that will both keep your kid’s attention, with its eye-catching designs and beautiful pictures, and teach them something. The entries are written to rhyme, so read-alongs will be fun. When it comes to the actual writing, I loved the way the author named the animals. It’s so cute that they all have alliterative names. Not just that, but the author included names that reflect where each animal is native to. To name a few, she used names from India, Indonesia, Botswana, and Aboriginal Australia. There’s also conservationist messaging that can introduce young kids to the topic. This book alone is a tool to teach your kids about conservation, diverse cultures, and animals, which is amazing.

This book also taught me a fair bit. For example, I had no idea peacocks could fly. The activities at the back, which are an amazing addition, also taught me a bit. The activities are really fun and engaging, and they are suitable for a variety of ages. There are colouring, drawing, and connect-the-dots activities for younger kids, and there are matching and trivia-based activities for older kids with more knowledge and dexterity. There are also more opportunities for learning in the activities, like when your kid inevitably asks you what a ruminant is.

This book was wonderful, cute, and engaging. It gets 5 stars from me. It would make a fantastic addition to a kid’s bookshelf.
