Review of Adventures with Daddy: At the Circus
In her book, "Adventures with Daddy: At the Circus," Y. Y. Chan tells the story of a girl grappling with performance anxiety, showing how a stressful condition can bring up both real and imagined problems. Our major character, Renee, is nervous because of her upcoming circus show. Renee worries that her shoes are too big and fears she may forget her tricks at the event. Can anything help Renee to calm down?
The narrative unfolded smoothly, and this helped to explain our major character's gradual growth and self-awareness. There is a strong connection between Renee and her dad, Charlie. I believed this helped Renee to express her fears freely. I liked the way Chan tailored Charlie and Renee's discussion to teach children how to manage their emotions. Renee's personal struggles will resonate with most children. Also, Renee's growth shows the power of support and confidence in oneself. The circus event was well thought out. The most interesting moment for me was the performance of the acrobats. I loved their skillful displays. But I think the most remarkable thing about their act is the impact it has on Renee.
With the absence of any complaints, I rate this book five out of five stars. Chan has done a great job creating a compelling, beautifully illustrated story that helps children learn how to manage stressful situations. Renee's triumph is practical proof to every child out there that their feelings, while valid, do not define them. It is a testimony that they too can rise above their personal challenges.
If your child is going through difficult situations or having trouble managing their emotions, I suggest you get them a copy of this book. The book will also appeal to any other child who loves stories with relatable characters or stories where the major character rises above their challenges. I look forward to reading more books from Y. Y. Chan.
