Inca, the "Queen of Kitties" and the head of her own detective agency, traveled to the island country of Sri Lanka with her owner and animal siblings for a nice, sunny holiday away from the dreary weather of London. The warm sandy beaches were just the right medicine for their little kitty hearts. "My furry family and I were behaving like flower buds in the warm sunshine." Their group did not go all the way to Sri Lanka just to relax, however. There was also a great mystery that needed to be solved! Our furry friends go on to make new friends with the local animals, visit tea plantations, encounter crazy monkeys, and even discover a secret room filled with stolen artifacts.
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat, is a story about teamwork and how working together is better than working alone. It is told in the first person narrative with Inca as our speaker. Some of the things Inca said made me smile and think, "She is definitely a cat." There was one instance where her friend Terrance, who just so happens to be a dog, helped to rescue her. To show her gratitude, Inca gave him a quick kiss. "There, I had done it: a big fat kiss as a thank you. Never before had I allowed myself to kiss a dog."
The author mentions actual locations in Sri Lanka along with interesting tidbits of information. I was very curious after reading that this small country has several UNESCO World Heritage sites. I saw online that there are, in fact, eight World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. I had no idea! R.F. Kristi's simple tale about a detective cat and her friends has made me want to visit Sri Lanka and see the beautiful tea plantations and the ancient city of Anuradhapura in person.
Serendipity Mystery is a good fit for 7-12 year olds. The writing is clear and easy to read, and I didn't notice any spelling or grammatical errors. This is not the first book in the series, so I would suggest starting with the first book and reading them in order. I did find myself becoming easily distracted while reading, but I know that this has to do with the age difference, as I am an adult and this book is geared toward a specific age group. I think children will enjoy reading about Inca and her friends.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I was impressed by how Ms. Kristi kept the whole story in the perspective of a cat. Being around cats often myself, I felt that Inca was not just a character in a story, but that she was a real cat with believable cat behaviors. I also appreciated the addition of information about sea turtles and wildlife, as well as the explanation of a few of the World Heritage sites. I thought this book was well thought out.
