Inca & Company is headed by a super cat detective named Inca. Fromage, Inca's Tabby cat brother, is joined by Cara, his Siamese sister, Monk, a Blue Russian, Charlotte, a little intelligent hamster and of course Mommy Missy and Aunt Florence. This is quite a list of characters for the fun and humorous children's book, Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat. Leaving their home in London, these furry friends are going on vacation with Mommy Missy to a cottage in Sri Lanka right on the beach.
Mommy reads in the local paper of a valuable old antique sword that was just stolen from the main museum in Columbo. That was the museum she planned to visit the very next day. Evidently, two men dressed as police officers got past the security guard of the museum. The guard let them in, as they told him they were there for security reasons. The two robbers soon handcuffed the guard and fled with the valuable antique sword.
In the estate next to their cottage, there lived a mama elephant and her baby. Inca was anxious to meet this huge animal. She had already made friends with a small sea turtle named Rani, and was enjoying daily conversations with her. Inca hated to leave the beach, but Mommy was meeting Detective Solo and his dog Terrance. Solo was known for his reputation of solving international and domestic crimes, so he was asked by the director of the museum to investigate the case of the missing sword. Everyone was off to visit a tea plantation and factory where they would be staying in a lodge. Plans were made to go on a safari, and Inca began to wonder what it would be like to live in the jungle. Fromage was really interested in his relatives, the leopards. Some other furry felines were curious about more than just the leopards. When Fromage disappears into the night, the story moves on with Inca searching the mysterious jungle. You can just picture the dark eerie night and the feeling of imminent danger.
The dialogue between Inca and the baby leopard cubs she encounters is priceless. Then mama leopard appears and new dialogues and emotions evolve as little Inca meets his kin from the jungle. Getting back to the cottage was a welcome relief. Everyone was anxious to leave the jungle and return to the beach, which they did the next day only to learn of new evidence about the stolen sword.
Rani, the little sea turtle and the baby elephant Meena had overheard two men discussing the stolen sword and how they were going to get it off the island without being caught. Plans were made for the four-legged detectives to search the men's house for the sword. When it became apparant there was a trap door behind the house, it was Meena's strong elephant trunk that lifted that door leading to a great discovery. After their long night's work in the the area of the trap door, the little detectives returned with their wares to their cottage on the beach. They placed their valuables at the feet of the bed of the sleeping detective Solo. Next morning, Solo was dashing to see the museum director.
Inca, Cara, Fromage, Meena, Rani and even little Charlotte have such a unique connection, and the conversations among them are insightful and heartwarming. Their joint efforts had brought them new adventures. They agreed that they would indeed return to this vacation spot every year.
This sweet children's book was a delight to read. I gave it a 4 out of 4 stars , as it held my interest every step of the way. The illustrations were cute and made the story come to life. I especially enjoyed the author's format of presenting the book in diary form. You could picture little Inca making every day's entry into her wonderful, action-packed journal. This is a delightful read for all ages.
