Inca, is a cat who calls herself "A super-duper cat detective," and her family are on vacation in Sri-Lanka, an island nation South of India, when they read a story in the newspaper about a missing antique sword. Inca, being a very snoopy cat, becomes interested in the story of the missing sword when she finds out that her friend Terrance and his "Dad" Solo have been invited by the museum that housed the sword to investigate and solve the mystery. Inca takes it upon herself to investigate and with the help of her family and friends, to ultimately solve the mystery. Inca's brother Fromage (a Tabby Cat), sister Cara (a Siamese Cat) and friends Charlotte (a Hamster) and Terrance (a yellow Dog) join her in the investigation while they travel around and learn about Sri Lanka. Along the way they meet a baby turtle named Rani and a baby elephant named Meena and her mother, who help solve the mystery.
Serendipity Mystery; Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a standalone book and the 7th book in a series about Inca the Siberian Detective Cat and her Detective Agency. It is a story meant for young people ages 7-12. It is written in the style of a diary where Inca writes about her activities each day. It is minimally illustrated but the illustrations are cute and help the young reader with the story line.
I enjoyed this book for its creative and fun characters. I really think children will love this story and the others in the series if they love animals and mystery adventures. This book is well written and in a style that will that will be comfortable for the age group it is intended for. Many of the clues to solving the mystery are clear throughout the storyline to direct the reader to the ultimate revealing of who stole the sword.
The fact that this book takes place in Sri Lanka adds a value where a child can learn about the country and its culture. I especially appreciated the sections when Inca and her friends are introduced to the variety of different animals in Sri Lanka. A particularly fun segment is when Inca finds herself meeting a family of Leopards face to face in the jungle.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 because this whimsical story weaves together the mystery of a stolen sword, with an adventure in another country, in the style of the diary of a young female cat detective. I would recommend this book for any child or anyone with the heart of a child who loves animals and mystery adventures.
