Serendipity Mystery is the seventh in a series of clever memoirs penned by Inca - Queen of Kitties, and head of a detective agency. This adventurous cat and her cohorts (furry friends by no means restricted to the feline persuasion) live in London, sometimes Paris, and Inca tells us their fame as investigators has begun to spread throughout Europe. But they also travel with their humans to the kind of exotic locales where something mysterious is bound to pop up.
This time, the travelers find themselves on holiday in Sri Lanka. And the mystery involves the disappearance of a very old sword. Their human friends get involved in hopes of recovering the antiquity, and it's not long before Inca and Company join in. They all put their talents together, to solve what may turn out to be a crime of international proportions.
Inca and her team bring their European appetites and lifestyle to the story. For example, great care goes into the preparation, presentation, and enjoyment of daily meals, as is the French way. Of course, the gang sure doesn't miss the rainy cool from London as they soak up the tropical sun. But the intrepid crew also soak up the cuisine, history, and landscape of Sri Lanka while making new friends, large and small, along the way.
And of course there's an adventure brewing beneath it all as the team tries to solve the mystery! The four legged aspect isn't left behind as these characters piece together the clues. Inca and company even ask their new friends in Sri Lanka to help share the investigative work. Differences in size, strength, and physical ability turn out to be assets as they divide up the work to be done.
Let's give credit where credit is due. I give this book, actually written by the very human R.F. Kristi, a 4 out of 4. This is terrific reading for the detective inside every kid. There's also a lot of learning going on between the lines. This crew of crime solvers can observe and search for clues while blending into the scenery, but sometimes their curiosity can get them into dangerous circumstances. The reader thinks through the situations and questions along with the narrator, as an exercise in problem solving. It's also an invitation to explore far off lands and cultures, and to expand our horizons by making new friends, even though they may seem, at first, very different from ourselves. I would definitely recommend this book, if for that reason alone.
