Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat is the seventh book in the “Inca Cat Detective” series by R.F. Kristi. It’s told from the point of view of Inca, a house cat that loves to solve mysteries. Inca and her siblings Cara and Fromage (also cats) travel with their owner (whom Inca refers to as “Mom”) from London to Sri Lanka for a vacation. When joined by Mom’s friend Solo and his dog Terrace, Inca learns of a sword that has gone missing from a museum. Solo works as a private investigator and Terrance helps Inca with her own detective agency by relaying information Solo’s work. Inca and her crew enlist the help of some new friends from the island to find the missing sword. There is a sea turtle named Rani and the baby elephant Meena. Rani and Meena are very excited to perform lookout duties and help Inca and her detective agency solve the case. The animals all work together to help find the missing sword and get back to their relaxing vacation.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is an interesting idea for a series as well as a great concept to grab children of all ages. What kid doesn’t love animals or a good mystery? The theme focuses on using clues to solve a mystery and teamwork, both great skills to instill in children! I did not come across any language that would make me hesitant to suggest it for all audiences.
I thought this was a great children’s book. The story is enjoyable and intriguing, even as an adult reader I couldn’t put it down. Some of the words seemed a little advanced for a kid’s book but nothing too challenging but I didn’t spot any grammatical errors when reading the book. The author uses very colorful similes to convey imagery and paints a vivid picture to keep the reader’s interest.
This book has fantastic illustrations. They are very cute and help advance the story. There is an illustration at the beginning of the book shows the family tree. This illustration was especially helpful as there are quite a few characters mentioned. The chapters were short enough to keep a child’s interest.
I’d give Serendipity Mystery 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book for children reading at or around a fifth grade level. The story was interesting and the characters were cute. There was no obscene language to worry about. It may just inspire a child to start solving mysteries on his or her own!
