Inca is not a simple cat. It is a snoopy cat. It is not simply snoopy; it is a detective. It solves cases with help of its friends and family. Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat deals with one of such adventures.
It is a simple enough story:Inca, its associates( two more cats and a mouse) and their mother go on a vacation to Srilanka, Asia. The very next day of arrival, they come to know about theft of antique swords and some gold coins from Colombo museum. The case would be given to Mr Solo, a famous private detective and also friend of the family. Inca is provided with all the necessary official information by Terrance, Solo’s dog. They join hands with Rani , a tortoise staying at the beach and Meena, a neighbour baby elephant to solve the case. The rest of the story is how they did it.
It was a really simple story, making it easy to follow for children. It has ten short chapters. As it had been told in a cat's perspective, everything was explained in a non-complicated way. Language was easy to understand; there were not many complex words or sentences. Children would love those cute illustrations. Sri Lanka had been explained in bits.
I ventured to read this book because I am the kind of adult who still loves to watch ‘Tom & jerry’ and loves to read books labelled as ‘Children books’. But let me tell you, this is the first time I am reading a book from a cat's POV or any other animal's POV for that matter. This is my first book in this series. That was not a problem as all were independent stories. Only in the beginning, I had slight difficulty in understanding which name belonged to which animal.
There were many themes children would love. Plenty of animals, introducing local animals and making them part of the adventure, exploration of various locations of Srilanka which mostly has nothing to do with the progression of story but tries to give readers novel experiences and finally the concept of good guys beating bad guys. In the end it shows how working as a group is important for success.
There are no negative points I can think of except for my persistent surprise at the cat's ability to understand everything around it. Anyway, I have an adult brain.
If you are not a person who would criticise about the possibility of animals’ understanding of moral values, legal issues and also things like UNESCO world heritage site, you might enjoy it. This is a quick read for adults. I am sure kids will love it. I am giving Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat 4 out of 4 stars. It was a fun read and I might read all the other books in the series.
