Will of the Hill is an entertaining children's book written by Marshall Cobb. It is the first book in the series. As preteens, we all encountered that bad day in school when the not-so-good-teacher found you in trouble severally. Or at least there was this one person in class who was always caught doing the wrong thing at the right time. This book took me back to when I was twelve, when trouble was part me.
Will is a 10-year-old boy who goes to The Hill school. He has a best friend, Dillon who he has known since he was two. They share a love for comic books. Will is always on the wrong foot with Ms. Early for as long as he can remember. Ms. Early is not the only enemy Will got, there is Gertrude or rather "Intrude" whose main intentions are always snooping around people's businesses and reporting her findings to Ms. Early. Will is always Getrude' s first target. It's not that Dillon is the good guy here but, he always charms his way around with his looks, which even Ms. Early can't overlook.
There is a theme of friendship in this book. Will and Dillon have been friends since they were young. They visit each other and read comic books. Their friendship is threatened when Dillon develops a liking for girls. They've always seen girls as enemies and, the only girls they liked were the superheroes in the comic books. Will their friendship survive this one?
The author's writing is flawless. The book cover is creatively done with a catchy look. I loved his source of inspiration (his two kids) which is the most relatable and first hand source. The author has painted his characters in the most believable way; Will hates homework which is typical for any kid. The vivid description of events give us clear visuals. Marshall writes in a way that children can understand easily. The pacing is steady and the grammar is simple. The book is also a short read. I loved Ms. Early's concept of double-trouble where for any minute you loose on someone's time, a double of it is deducted from yours. It is a clever way of minimizing mischievousness. Getrude's nickname is the funny one, because of always invading people's space, she is named Intrude.
This book is a reminder of the awesome school days. The adventures, parties, sports, comic books and name-calling made it amazing.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There's nothing I didn't like in this book. The book is professionally edited which is the most important thing since the target audience are children. This is a good book for children between 10-16 years. I also recommend it to adults who want to re-live the crazy old days.
