After reading Will of The Hill by Marshall Cobb I am happy to say I thoroughly enjoyed this children’s book. The story follows a young boy dealing with typical issues of kids his age. Will lives in a small town with a big hill, which is the setting for his school. As a comic book lover, Will’s greatest hobby tends to get him in trouble. Although this book is written for school-aged children, it can be thoroughly enjoyed by adults as well.

The fact that I was able to enjoy this book as an adult was one of my favorite things about Will on The Hill. There were many times throughout the book that I found myself giggling because it was so relatable and took me back to childhood. On top of allowing adults to feel nostalgic about their past, I also enjoyed how Will’s imagination is so wild yet still understandable for an older audience. Cobb truly engages the reader from the first few pages and is able to maintain that captivating energy throughout the story.

I was very impressed with Cobb’s ability to thoroughly portray each character in a way that helps the reader visualize them. As an adult I was able to relate kids from my childhood to each character and I imagine that children who read this story will be able to do the same. The reader can practically smell the kid who doesn’t use soap, hear the spoiled girl’s tattling and screams, and imagine the teacher’s disdain toward the rebellious students.

Finally, I enjoyed how articulate the author was. As a parent whose children would be interested in reading such a fun story, I found comfort in the fact that they would be reading something so well-written. Cobb uses excellent vocabulary as well as proper grammar, which I think many parents would be happy to find in any book their child is reading. In the end, Cobb was sure to wrap up the story with an important lesson for children to treat others with respect.

Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as I truly enjoyed how Marshall Cobb depicted his characters and writes in a way that is fun for both children and adults. Perhaps most important to me was the care that was taken to properly edit the book and make it appropriate for a young audience. I would recommend this book to friends with children as well as teachers and librarians who are suggesting books for their students. I would love to read more work by Cobb as I am sure his other books are just as entertaining.
