Are you ready for adventure with just a touch of mystery? Then Will of the Hill by Marshall Cobb would be right up your alley. In this story, we follow Will as he navigates what it means to be 10. He is a comic-book obsessed kid with one true best friend in this world, Dillon. The story begins with Will at his school. It happens to reside at the top of a very large hill in the center of town. Throughout it's 103 pages, this book gives a look into Will's life and the strange town he resides in.
Will is like any typical 10-year-old boy. He enjoys his alone time to read and hang out with his best friend. He has conflict with a classmate named Gertrude. Throughout the story, Gertrude plays a role in Will's day-to-day activities. This story is about learning how to get along with others and taking personal responsibility for your actions.
As a children's book, Will of the Hill does a wonderful job approaching these lessons in a way kids will understand. The world that the book is set in is magnificent and full of mystery. I like how the author set up this world to possibly have many stories told about it. It was a fun read from start to finish. This book also has some great characterization. This is especially evident in how the narrator describes the different people of the town. The reader can tell that they are seeing things through Will's eyes. For instance, his teacher's hair is referred to as a lion's mane.
I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is exceptionally written, builds a fantastic environment, and truly put a smile on my face by the end. I did not find many editing errors in this book. The biggest issue I ran into was some Kindle formatting issues. However, I decided to not deduct points for those because they were not distracting to the overall story. I would recommend this book to any late-elementary or middle school student. As an adult, I did enjoy reading this book as something lighthearted. It's nice to take a break from serious reading topics every now and again.
Will of the Hill is a fast read. It only took me about 1 1/2 hours, but it would probably take kids around 2 or 3 depending on their reading speed. The best part about this book is the writing style. Cobb does an amazing job insuring the reader is invested in the characters quickly. The vivid details in this book are also wonderful. I had no problem visualizing the characters and their small, goofy town. If you are looking for a light read or have a younger child in your life, I would hands down recommend this book.
