In Reconciliation by Carolyn Palmer Hartley, Adele Christina Dawson finally broke free from her evil stepfather, August Beck. She returned home to West Virginia to bond with her grandmother, Kettie Dawson, before she passed. With her grandmother gone, Adele was now heiress and owner of the Flat Top Pocahontas Coal Mine Company, and she had the responsibility of leading her six sisters. Adele discovered her new title came with many friends and a healthy dose of enemies. As family secrets were revealed, Adele found that her family's story was more twisted than she thought. But she must confront her first enemy, August Beck.

In Reconciliation, the author created a heartwarming story that was exciting and easy to read. The characters were interesting and enjoyable, and readers would love them. Adele would have readers enamored with her subtle strength and intelligence despite being just a nineteen-year-old. Her sister, Benita, would impress with her boldness and vivaciousness, and Tommy, her best friend, would endear with his fun nature and selflessness. In all, the characters in this book came alive. I was intrigued by the author's masterful narration. The chemistry between Adele and her siblings was genuine and strong; it mirrored the typical bickering between sisters.

The book was wrought with suspense and excitement. From the beginning, the introduction of a young, seemingly naive character aroused enough curiosity that kept me going. Also, Adele would awaken protective instincts in readers. Whether it was due to her age or the responsibilities she took up, it effectively melded with the thick shroud of doubt the author created that would keep readers in a perpetual state of suspicion about the intentions of those who surrounded Adele. Even with the people Adele trusted, readers could be reluctant to trust anyone with her. All these details and strategic hints in the book that promised some profound revelations heightened the anticipation and excitement.

As though the excitement was not enough, the author added further thrill with a beautiful love story that would cause many readers to blush and giggle. Humor was not left out also. For instance, readers might crack up with Briana's response when Adele described their grandmother as an ugly, evil witch with a scrawny rat as a pet: "Really, Delly? She's perfect for our family."

Hartley transported readers into another beautiful place with the setting of this book. The town of Bramwell gave off that small-community aura, where everyone knew everyone and their secrets, and the whole town protected one another. Also, with the apparent southern accent, readers would probably experience nostalgia for that country vibe.

Everything about this book was just right, from the characters to the love story. Reconciliation was crafted and delivered to provide the most satisfying experience. Apart from the two errors, there was nothing off-putting about this book. Therefore, I'd rate it four out of four stars. If you enjoy family-centered stories, you'd like this one.

Adele has her hands full between her domineering father, siblings, and inheritance. Hopefully, she's a quick learner!
