Review of The Royal Secret
The Royal Secret by John Bentley is a historical fiction novel that follows Mrs. G as she attempts to uncover secrets from decades ago. On the other hand, we meet Queen Elizabeth and learn about her accession to the throne. Readers get a glimpse of how royal business was conducted in the past, and they will be thrilled to discover a few speculated secrets about Shakespeare. Tag along and discover what Mrs. G decoded and the secrets that awaited discovery.
I found Queen Elizabeth's relationship with her sons to be very entertaining. Their interactions puzzled me, and I was concerned about how she treated her children. Elizabeth's relationship with her sons was distant, which caused her to make significant errors that could be seen as a betrayal of her bloodline. What kind of mother would choose to trust others over her son and possibly even bring about his death? She was too preoccupied with safeguarding her throne and status to care about anything else, even if it meant subjugating her sons. Some suspense was created in the story as I felt there was more to Ethan than he let on, as he seemed overly interested in Mrs. G's whereabouts and discoveries for a stranger. I did not doubt that their encounters had not happened by chance.
I struggled with the beginning of the book because I felt a lot of information was being released on the first pages without any character development. There was also a lot of historical information given in the first chapters of the book, which made it difficult to understand the plot, and I even thought some information provided in the book was unnecessary. The book had a few too many characters, and I found myself having to go back and read certain passages to figure out each character's place in the story. This was made difficult by the fact that the book was set in various periods and featured characters from various eras and events.
I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars. The book was exceptionally edited, and I found no grammatical errors. However, the book made it difficult for me to focus on any one event because there were so many plots and ideas going on. I frequently lost track of what was happening and had to go back and read some pages.
I suggest this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction. The book contains some mystery and suspense that will keep readers interested in the story.
