The tyranny of Roman soldiers who scourged Jesus Christ at the time of his crucifixion is an act that would never vacate Christian minds, as the notion seems totally incomprehensible to people. This book, The Spartan who Defied Rome by Anthony Vincent Bruno, however, depicted a particular legionary who refused a direct order from a higher official to strike Jesus at that time. Marcus Tychon, a principled Spartan who made it his life's work to join the renowned Roman legionary, was turned into a Roman slave and exiled to a horrible mine when he refused to touch Jesus at his scourging in Jerusalem. In this book, we navigate Tychon’s time as a prisoner in the Bithynia mines, condemned for death, his meeting with Mary, and other factors that shaped his unusual life. With his direct contact with Jesus, Tychon, who holds no high regard for Jews, has to acknowledge certain things he never thought wordworthy. This is certainly a story worth reading, and I’m sure it’s something you would enjoy.

This book boasts many positive aspects. I was intrigued with the storytelling, and as a lover of history myself, I couldn’t drop this book until I got to the last page. With its wide array of remarkable characters, it was a never-ending amazement for me as I immersed myself in this story. Marcus Tychon, the Spartan whose principles, or disobedience, shaped his life in a way so uneven, definitely had some values that I envied for myself. While I read about Mother Mary, for some reason, I got at peace with myself. It seemed as if she, in all her glory, was within the pages of this book.

The author’s inspiration for writing such a book is nothing but divine, from my perspective, and there’s nothing short of positivity in this book. I greatly enjoyed the tale this book portrays, and my faith was definitely fortified by Tychon’s journey through tribulation.

If you haven’t realised, some parts of this book discuss Jesus, and although it is not entirely directed at Christians, I believe that it’s more suitable for them. Moreover, this book was professionally edited, as I only found a few errors in it. The writing style was top-notch, and the historical aspect made it an excellent read for me. Therefore, I’m inclined to rate this brilliant read nothing less than 5 out of 5 stars. I found nothing wrong with this book, and I feel that it is very befitting of such a rating.

In conclusion, I recommend this book to lovers of history, and to those who would appreciate a tale of love, discovery, friendship, and fulfilment.

People who stand up for their believe no matter what the cost and even if they don't believe the same as you, are, for the most part, worthy of being emulated.
