Amulet’s Rapture by Linnea Tanner was an interesting book to read. It had my attention from the very beginning, but it also left me feeling weirdly annoyed sometimes. The writer’s choice of words and the way that the characters interacted sometimes made me feel like I was reading a teenage romance novel until the very explicit language and descriptions of sexual acts/sexual assault appeared (I definitely recommend this for mature audiences). For this, I give the book three stars out of five.

This book is the third book in the series and is set during the Roman Empire era. It follows the cursed love between a Cantiaci heiress trying to reclaim her throne named Catrin and a Roman nobleman named Marcellus Antonius. While I have not read the other two books in this series, there’s a brief synopsis of how Catrin has become the slave of a Roman general named Decimus Flavius and how Marcellus lost all memories of being married to Catrin. The story continues to build as the two are reunited and must navigate how to evade getting killed because of their love while also getting Catrin back to her country so that she can become the rightful Queen.

Not having read the other books made it very confusing at first who the characters were, even with the synopsis, so it took me some time to get adjusted to who everyone was. There were plenty of shocking moments based on acts of sexual violence and very explicit language that I was not ready for because the author wrote in a way that made it sound like this was a teen’s novel. Despite the shocking moments, I still found myself wanting to understand what was going to happen to Catrin and Marcellus. This was the first book in a while that has made me actually want to read every single day. If the language seemed a bit more mature, I think I would have been able to give it four stars, but sometimes it seemed a bit over the top for my liking even though I liked that she tried to keep the language to the time period.

The plot sounds really interesting, and it would, undoubtedly, be captivating to read what happens, particularly to Catrin as she seeks to become queen. One would definitely imagine that the journey would be very dangerous. Thanks for the review, @Jada Hawkins-Hill.
