Review: The Widow of Larkspur Inn by Lawana Blackwell

Post by kderse »

Julie Hollis in the book The Widow of Larkspur Inn by Lawana Blackwell finds herself depending on God more than ever as a recent widow without any money to her name. She must depend on Him as she figures out how to turn an abandoned coaching inn into a lodging house for those looking for some quiet time in the country versus the busy pace of the city.

I would recommend this to teens and adults. It is written as a christian read.

This book started out very slow making me think my score would be one or two stars and in the last couple chapters turned into a three star rating. I picked up this book for two reasons. One my online bookclub on goodreads was reading it and two it was free on amazon.

This was an enjoyable read. Predictable and well at times cheesy and unrealistic. When we meet Julie she seems like a very spoiled house wife who has never had to do anything for herself or for her children and now finds herself widowed with no money and with no idea what to do. Then a couple chapters later she is repairing a 200 year old home with minor repairs and a little scrubbing. This seemed unrealistic for two reasons. One how would she even know how to do this with the image we were presented, how was she suddenly so independent and strong? Two how could a run down 200 year old home only have a few repairs. Despite these weird unrealistic details it was a nice read, which helped me relax several evenings, and accompanied me under my blankets on several cold and windy days.

There are several different stories going on this book and at times can be hard to keep up. Towards the end of the book they all come together which is nice and become less confusing. Romance was a different pace which I enjoyed, it was based more on friendship that turned into romance and not over night but over a year. Similar to the pace of the relationships so is the book. It is not a page turner but a very relaxing read if you give it time. You may be tempted to not finish this book but I encourage you to stick with it the second part of the book is by far better then the first part.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars.
