Roelof Beukes provides an interesting look into the history of the “Afrikaner Volk” with each day teaching us something new of their history and also implements this history to his own life.

Roelof is turning 30 in 31 days and this scares him. Like most people he has set certain goals for himself, which should be reached before 30 and if not met…well tough. As each day progresses he teaches us not only of the history of the “Afrikaner Volk”, but also finds out something of himself with each passing day. He is literally learning from his ancestors and also provides us with delicious recipes to get us in the “Afrikaner” spirit.

This book was really enjoyable. Not only does Roelof have an interesting way of capturing the dread and disbelief most people feel when nearing “dream-set” birthdays (with this I mean that age you set for yourself to reach all your goals and dreams; the age to reach otherwise nothing would be worth it), but he also incorporates the history of the “Afrikaner Volk” in such a way that you can’t stop reading about their heroes, struggles and, lastly, try their amazing food.

I loved the references to certain historical figures making them seem more part of the current world than history. Roelof also has a talent for describing the South African landscape and history in such a way that the reader can smell the Jacaranda’s blooming purple in Pretoria and hear the thundering waves as Wolraad Woltemade and his trusty stead saves 14 people form a wrecked ship, before perishing in the turbulent sea. He gives us a taste of the “Afrikaner Volk’s” cuisine, giving a recipe with each passing day (and, for that matter, fattening his readers with the delicious recipes :D ), providing us with the story behind each recipe: whether it is an old family recipe shared between generations or just a feel-good snack.

The book really captures the essence of South African history and with Roelof gathering personal guidelines and stories of hope from his heritage, the reader also takes the messages and makes it their own, even if you know nothing of South Africa or the people’s struggles in the past or in the present.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars and would definitely recommend it to readers who would like to learn more about the South African Folk and how they came to be. Allons-y!
