This sounds like a good book for anyone interested in the history of slavery. It appears the biracials had it very hard as they couldn't identify with either groups. I'm so glad Effie Herndon was strong and determined to achieve her dream.
Insofar as the word 'should' even has meaning, then we must say that the past is exactly as it should be, everything that happened should have happened, and everything that should happen will happen

A historical fiction novel that shows the resilience of Effie as she battles cultural norms in a segregated society.

I was considering reading this book next, and now that I have read your review, I have decided to definitely do so.
The immensely descriptive writing style you've described is what did it for me.
Thanks for the review!

Kelly Rodgers seems to be a talented writer and has done well with this intriguing historical fiction. I am interested to know about the "incredible tale of resilience, physical and mental suffering, human cruelty and brutality, family drama, and some detective work" that you mention in your well done review. Like to read it all. Congratulations on the BOTD!

A very well written review, thank you. The sample introduced three main characters and started building up an interesting mystery right from the start. What on earth is really going on in the sanatorium? Something very shocking occurred and character Effie had been roped into it, as a nurse who had just walked in the door. I love the start of this story. From the review it is clear it is my kind of book. 4 out of 4 for the review. The reviewer did a great job as did the author. Well done for Book of the Day.

Inspired by the story of a biracial family, it examines the society of the American South in the late 1900s. It reflects the racial segregation and prejudices of the era. Fans of historical fiction may want to check this out.

The life stories of Fern Walker and Effie Herndon seem to be a no pleasant one from this review. I will consider reading "The Truth Together" by Kelly Rodgers.
