I found the sample quite enjoyable, and I am impressed to hear that this is a true story set in the place where the author grew up. Interviewing family and family friends is a superb way to capture the personal historical context. The plot sounds devastating and emotional as well, adding a real element to what we might read about in history books. Thanks for a captivating review!

Seeing the title arouses my interest to read the book. I think we should learn from history and after reading the book I learned it again. Many thanks to the author for reminding me of history

History is meant to be cherished. I like the fact that the author revisits the Hitler times and your review pushes me to read the book. Thanks for the review.

During the genocide in Rwanda, I remember a story about a woman watching her husband buried alive from the shoulders down. Only the head was left to stick out of the ground so that it can be kicked for fun. I wonder how can such a thought form in a human mind? Nice review that made me think if humans are more evil than they are good. Kudos to the author.

A fictional story that is based on true events? I think that this book sounds like one that I'd at least be interested in checking out. I think that I will put this book on my to-be-read shelf and check out a few pages and see if it piques my interest.

There is so much of history that we still don't know. The Netherlands is rarely linked with WWII history. This looks intriguing and eye-opening. Thanks for this informative recommendation. Great review!

This sounds like quite a heavy read. While I am glad that this true story has been told, I don't think I will be reading this one. The atrocities committed during WWII defy comprehension, and these unique perspectives keep us from forgetting how truly awful it was. Thanks for a great review.

I always like reading about stories that have a basis in fact especially when they uncover things that you did not previously know about in the first place. I did not know anything about the Nazis occupation in the Netherlands because most of the time we are taught about the occupation of France or the bombings of England. I also am inspired by the resilience of these people who continued to survive despite the horrors that they endured.

I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, but I do appreciate when historical fiction books give you insight into true events like this one does. Thanks for the review!

Wow, an amazing historical fiction story. Despite being a fiction most of the event of the book actually happened. Reading this review makes me want to read the book. I will want to know how the people if people of Putten survived this tragedy. Nice Review.

I love history but I have never loved reading about Nazis. So I might or might not read it. Congratulations to the author on BOTD. Thanks for your review.

Every now and then you read a story that reminds you of how lucky we are to only read about stories like this. I can only imagine the horrors people that experienced war and Nazi occupation faced. I am grateful for the relative peace we have now.

I have long been fascinated by the personal accounts of those who survived WWII and the Nazi regime. I naturally assume that the book will have depth of emotion, as you mention. Though I generally avoid books that are 'tear-jerkers,' given the subject of this one, I'll be putting it on my reading shelf. Thanks for the well-written review!
